It’s Time to Lower the Blades

The first day of spring is just a couple of days away, and already we have been experiencing some of the signs of the season in recent weeks. We love this time of year at Simply Green Lawn Care, located in Lilburn, GA. Flowers are in bloom and the sun is shining. We wrote recently about about our spring lawn care checklist, but another thing we should be paying attention to is the length we are cutting our grass. Now is the time to scalp those lawns!

So how do you scalp a lawn properly, and why?

• Firstly, make sure you have warm season grass, like bermuda or zoysia. Cool season grasses, like fescue, will not benefit from cutting it shorter this time of year.
• Before you start, make sure all of the leftover frost from winter is gone (this will not be a problem this year). If frost still exists, you could actually do more harm than good.
• You might wonder, just how short you need to cut for it to be considered scalping. Put your mowing blades on its lowest level to efficiently scalp your lawn.
• The act of scalping your lawn removes dry and dormant turf, and can actually help prevent weed problems during the coming months.
