Fall Lawn Care in Metro Atlanta

What Is Overseeding and Why Is It Important?

“Overseeding” simply means to scatter seed over already-established grass to help thicken and fill in any areas that are sparse. If you’ve ever stepped onto a beautiful lawn, you know that the grass is like a dense cushion. In order to achieve that density for a lush lawn, you will need to occasionally overseed your grass with new seed. Maintaining a thick lawn isn’t merely a matter of appearance; it also helps prevent weeds from taking hold.

While overseeding Fescue is important, you don’t want to go “overboard” on overseeding either. To provide a benefit to your lawn, you need to apply the correct amount of seed. Remember that each grass seed you plant will not simply grow into a blade of grass. Each seed will grow into a bunch or clump of grass. If you scatter seed too densely, each clump of Fescue will have to fight harder for resources, leading some plants to outcompete the others. Another benefit of overseeding is that you don’t have to rip out and replace sections of turf that need additional care.

When to Aerate in Atlanta (And Why)

The period of September to mid-October is prime time to aerate and overseed your yard in metro Atlanta. Aeration is simply a process of punching small holes into your soil, resulting in increased air and water circulation. It’s also a good idea to do it in conjunction with overseeding, because the plugs (or cores) of soil that are removed make room for the new Fescue seed to make direct contact with the soil.

Aeration also benefits your lawn by reducing thatch buildup and turf compaction that can prevent grass from getting the nutrients it needs to thrive. The more you give your Fescue lawn room to “breathe,” the healthier and more robust it will be. A happy lawn develops deeper, stronger roots, which in turn guards the lawn against potential future hazards like drought, weeds, and insects.
