In the holiday spirit, here’s some free advice: The way you treat your lawn during the winter will determine how it looks when springtime arrives. Fortunately, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you succeed with your winter lawn care.

Winter Lawn Care Tips

Slow Your Mow

By now, your grass is entering winter dormancy, which is sort of like hibernation. During this time, it’s going to be more susceptible to damage. Injury (from people, animals, or vehicles walking on it) and disease are more serious during dormancy because the grass is not “running at full speed,” so to speak. Any damage is going to take longer to heal, so it’s a “no mow” season. Your final lawn mowing for the year should be very minor. Don’t cut off more than one-third of the grass height.

Another important winter lawn care tip is to refrain from mowing wet grass. By late winter, when temperatures are on the rise and we’re getting lots of rain, you may be tempted to get out there and mow…But just say no! Mowing wet grass can be extremely damaging to the lawn. It can harm the roots, kill new grass shoots, and even leave you with uneven areas in your lawn.

Let It Be

During winter dormancy, mowing your lawn is not the only hazard to healthy grass. Refrain from administering fertilizer or any other chemical treatments. Give us a call to schedule your late winter fertilization.

Keep Off the Grass, Please

We don’t have as many cold days as some places, but there will still be plenty of days when the temperature is freezing or colder. Don’t walk on your grass when it’s frozen, as you can break and damage the blades. As we’ve mentioned, that damage can have more serious effects during the dormancy stage. Try to stick to established sidewalks and paths, and encourage your family to do the same.

Look Ahead to Spring

Once all of your winter lawn maintenance is done, it’s time to plan for the spring! Remember to call us ahead of time to schedule your early spring lawn care services, so we can get your yard off to a great start for you to enjoy all year.
